Claude Shannon

Random notes about Claude Shannon., the founder of information theory. Although Wikipedia says he was born in Petoskey, Michigan, a statue of him was erected in Gaylord Michigan as part of six statues erected in his honor, including the University of Michigan. The lispmeister found the TeX source for Shannon’s seminal A Mathematical Theory of Communication.

Petoskey! When I was camping in Michigan with Jen’s folks, around Sleeping Bear Dunes, I found many. None of them as good as this(*), but hunting about for Michigan’s State Rock became a highlight of the trip.

That’s because that’s a polished petosky, of course. Petosky hunting can become obsessive, and can lead one to ignore the beauties around one … I’ve seen it happen many a time….

I do need to figure out how to polish & preserve mine. Don’t worry, it won’t become an obsession — it was merely a fun diversion on a beach walk. (Really, I can quit any time… err…)
