The most ambiguous place name in the US is …

The most ambiguous place name in the US is Lake Winnipesaukee (map) with 163 official alternatives (according to the USGS and its US Board on Geographic Names), followed by Okefenokee Swamp (105), the Mississippi River (103) and the Potomac River (93).

(Lukas is right, I mean ‘place with the most ways to say it’.)

It’s funny, I thought you were going to talk about the name that corresponded to the most places. In some ways Lake Winnipesaukee is the least ambiguous place since there’s so many ways to refer to it.

I noted with a chuckle that a current American Express ad for their new philanthropic program –the ad featuring Andre Agassi, Ellen DeGeneres and a few other celebs– cites Lake Winnepesaukee also (as a no-name, walk-on conservationist’s favorite cause). The reference you made last month had been forgotten, but now I see (on June 4) that once again, you were ahead of the curve!

So what’s the next big trend, O Great Kreskin?
